Religious Persecution Update

Meriam-IbrahimMeriam Ibrahim, the 27-year-old doctor sentenced to death last month in Sudan for converting from Islam to Christianity, was suddenly released from prison on Monday. Earlier this month she gave birth in prison to a baby daughter, Maya. Her husband, Daniel Wani, is an American citizen and was happy to be reunited with his wife, the newborn and the couple’s 21-month-old son, who was also confined with Ms. Ibrahim.

The Islamic Sharia Law condemned her to beatings and death, for marrying a Christian and refusing to recant her Christian faith.

Although human rights activists, along with European leaders and our Secretary of State, urged the Sudanese government to repeal its “barbaric” laws banning Muslims from converting, President Obama was mute about the Muslim laws and Ms. Ibrahim’s release.

The U.S. government now needs to move quickly to grant this Christian family safety and full benefits of citizenship.
