Our Unwed-Mom Epidemic

teen_momsI just saw an ad for a new television comedy this fall. Since it is to be about the “family,” I focused in. The daughter announced to her parents that she has a new boyfriend and, by the way, she is pregnant. Judging from the national statistics on unwed-moms, she is, sadly, not unusual. Nationally, 41% of all U.S. births and up to 73% of children in certain racial subsets are born to single-moms.

Will the television daughter abort the baby? Allow others to adopt the baby? Or will she keep and rear the baby as a single-mom? Have her parents warned her about the hard lives of children whose parents are not married: that they are more likely to experience poverty, lower educational achievements and higher odds of criminal behavior?

And, where is the father? Is he playing video games instead of “manning up” to be the husband and father he should be?

Parents, pastors and media producers: let’s actively seek to reverse this unwed-mom epidemic!
