The importance of intact biological families is threatened by selfish failures to keep the covenant of marriage. This biblical institution, which historically binds mothers, fathers and their children together, is harmed when adults demand personal freedoms rather than sacrifice for family stability. Further, this very first institution of human society is weakened by decades of “no-fault divorce,” where fathers are absent and mothers are left alone to raise children.
Add the substantial evidence from social science about child poverty, mental and emotional distress, educational failure, crime and other problems, and it suggests that when marriage breaks down——society breaks down too.
This month, with Father’s Day ahead, let’s be reminded of the importance of involved fathers in the lives of their children, and also of the personal growth fathers can derive from relationships with their children. Someone said “fathering is not something perfect men do, but something that perfects men.”
