Parenting Lessons from the Dad-in-Chief

The latest government statistics show that the majority of Black and Hispanic children in the US are born out of wedlock and grow up in single-parent homes. These minority children suffer the effects of the stress and instability of having only one parent to provide financial, educational and emotional support.

As we approach Father’s Day, in our nation, the family priorities of President and Mrs. Obama should be noted. In an interview in Time magazine, Mr. Obama mentioned that he and Michelle don’t go to many Washington parties, because they are committed to eating dinner with their daughters.

Whatever your political persuasion may be, we should acknowledge the President’s portrait of a stable family, where the husband appears to love and respect his wife and prioritizes time with his children. In this, the Dad-in-Chief models parenting lessons, with self-imposed limitations and even professional sacrifices, based on a greater love for family.
